What to expect during the assessment process

There are three steps within the assessment process:

Background information gathering

An essential part of the assessment process is gathering information from parents and school through questionnaires and discussions. A visual difficulties screener is part of this information gathering.

Information about me and the assessment process can be provided for the child to help calm any worries they may have about the assessment.

Screener and diagnostic assessment

The assessment starts with an informal chat with the child to explain what my job is and what the tests are trying to find out.

Initially, a screener is administered, the score of which determines whether a full diagnostic assessment is required. This takes around 20 minutes.

If further testing is thought to be beneficial, a full assessment takes around a further 2.5 hours which includes plenty of breaks

Written report

I aim to get written reports returned within 3 weeks. It is usual for me to contact parents during this time to discuss findings and clarify detail.

Once written, reports are shared with parents and verbal feedback given. I also offer 30 - 45 minutes MS Teams meeting with school staff and parents to discuss the report and provide support with recommendations.
